El Rosario: Large-Scale Shrimp-to-Tilapia Farm Conversion
AquaSol was retained by El Rosario, S.A. and Aquamar, S.A. to develop and implement a strategic plan to convert two of the largest vertically integrated shrimp farming operations in Ecuador into commercial tilapia farming operations. Together, the two farms covered more than 4,000 hectares of aquaculture production area.
This project highlights AquaSol’s expertise in large-scale aquaculture transformation, specifically the conversion of shrimp farming infrastructure into high-performance tilapia production systems in Latin America.
The engagement spanned strategic planning, system redesign, technology transfer, and on-the-ground operational support. AquaSol advised on hatchery production, grow-out systems, feed quality, water management, processing, and workforce training. The project required careful alignment of biological performance, infrastructure reuse, and operational processes to ensure a successful transition at scale.
Technical Scope
- Hatchery system redesign
- Pond conversion and water control systems
- Feed strategy optimisation
- Biosecurity adaptation for tilapia
- Processing and logistics integration
Project Outcome
- Successfully converted over 4,000 hectares of shrimp farms to tilapia production
- Delivered a strategic and operational roadmap for large-scale farm transformation
- Improved production efficiency and operational performance
- Supported the development of one of the largest tilapia farming operations in Latin America
- Achieved a commercially successful transition from shrimp to finfish production
Large-scale shrimp-to-tilapia conversion projects are increasingly relevant in global aquaculture, where producers seek diversification, improved margins, and reduced biological risk. This project demonstrates how existing infrastructure can be repurposed efficiently to support alternative species at scale.
